Community Safety Resource Handbook

Curated by VSAUW to provide the members in our community resources as well as a procedure in the event that an incident occurs that harms our community. It is to ensure that all members are educated on these topics along with understanding the support and resources available.

 

Community Guidelines

The following are expectations that VSAUW community members agree to follow and respect when they enter the VSAUW space which can include our general meetings, retreats, and other events that our organization is involved in.

Respect, Boundaries, and Consent

  1. Look out for other members and do your best to prevent exclusion of them

  2. Opening up the circle for members to join or including them in the conversation for questions and inputs

  3. Ask for consent when doing things and do check-ins

    1. “How’s everything going? Are you feeling okay right now? If you need to take a break, let’s take one!”

  4. Consider people’s differing comfort levels before initiating physical contact

Inclusivity

  1. Accommodate for member diversity and intersectionality

    1. **Race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, religion affiliations, learning levels, education level, mobility access, etc.

  2. Use gender-neutral language to refer to an audience or someone who’s gender and/or pronouns you do not know of

  3. Explain Vietnamese culture and UW references to those who are not familiar of them

  4. Uphold willingness and patience for those who take longer to process information

Mindfulness and Empathy

  1. Communicate with courtesy, empathy, and understanding

  2. Be mindful of everyone’s values and beliefs as we come from different backgrounds and upbringings

Accountability

  1. Be open to feedback to correct behaviors and attitude (Intention vs Impact)

    1. When being intervened by others, listen and take in their perspectives in order to correct any behaviors or thoughts that unnerve other individuals

  2. Be mindful of surroundings and other members

    1. Report to/Tell an officer or trusted community member if anything seems suspicious, discomforting, and/or threatening within the community space
